Why would one expend the resources but not the effort? If it was to ensure everyone feeling remembered, it would only be necessary to buy presents for those without other company. I do not understand why anyone would feel "obligation" to reciprocate anyway. Let alone desperation or low self-esteem they must possess to feel the need to endeavor to please so many others.
